Cadbury faces criticism for 'gesture eggs' this Easter.

The British confectionery company Cadbury is under fire from Christians for promoting chocolate eggs as 'gesture eggs' ahead of the Easter holiday, notably omitting the word 'Easter' from its marketing.

The decision has stirred discontent among some Christians who accuse the company of attempting to diminish the significance of Easter.

They question why the term 'Easter' is being removed from chocolate eggs, a product widely associated with the holiday.

Tim Dieppe, from the Christian Concern policy group, remarked, "If it wasn't for Easter, we wouldn't have a reason for Easter eggs." CT.

Profits - And Losses.

I Read That First Line And Despair.

While giving evidence in the case of Felix Ngole, a senior member of staff at Touchstone Support Leeds said that sharing the belief that there are only two genders could ‘lead to death.’

Mr Dave Pickard also said that a staff member sharing the famous Bible verse John 3:16, would be ‘triggering’ to an LGBTQI+ service user using NHS services.

The verse says in the Book of John: ‘For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.’

In response to the comment, Employment Judge Jonathan Brain, said: “What is triggering about that?”

Operations Director, Mr Pickard was giving evidence at Leeds Employment Tribunal defending Stonewall backed Touchstone’s decision to withdraw a job offer because Mr Ngole said he would not ‘embrace and promote LGBTQI+ rights’ due to his Christian beliefs.

Supported by the Christian Legal Centre, Mr Ngole, 46, has brought claims of discrimination and harassment against Touchstone.

In May 2022, Mr Ngole had been offered his ‘dream job’ as a Mental Health Support via Touchstone, who recruit on behalf of the NHS, until it was discovered he had once won a landmark legal case over his right to freedom of speech.

In 2015, Mr Ngole was thrown off his social worker training course at Sheffield University following a debate on Facebook which quoted passages from the Bible about same-sex marriage.

But in a major victory for Christian freedoms, the Court of Appeal ruled in 2019 that Mr Ngole would ‘never discriminate against anyone’ because of his Christian beliefs and therefore he was he was allowed to return to his training and subsequently qualified as a social worker.

Nonetheless, Mr Ngole, despite being offered a job with Touchstone, was invited back for a ‘second interview’ in which he was interrogated about his beliefs. He was told by Touchstone bosses that unless he could demonstrate how he would ‘embrace and promote homosexual rights’, the job offer would be withdrawn.

They said that his beliefs did not ‘align’ with Touchstone’s ethos as an ‘inclusive employer’ and that he posed a risk to the organisation’s reputation.

He was also told in the second interview that he would be expected to attend LGB and Transgender awareness training but would not be free to share his views despite others being free to share their LGBT affirming views.

Despite Mr Ngole seeking to assure Touchstone that he had never been accused of forcing his beliefs on anyone and that he had never been accused of discriminating against anybody, the job offer was eventually withdrawn.

Prior to this, in May 2022, Mr Ngole was the best performing candidate in an interview having gained the highest marks of any candidate on an equality and diversity assessment.

Felix’s evidence – ‘The Good Samaritan’

In giving evidence, Mr Ngole told the panel of the story of the Good Samaritan and said that Christians are to go out of their way to care for people who may not be exactly like them.

Mr Ngole said: ‘I saw the Touchstone job as a position to look after people and care for people. I cannot say that I am serving a loving God, then hate the people he created.’

He said he had been a Christian from a ‘tender age’, held the views on gender and sex which appear in the Bible, and said that he had never had a complaint in 20 years during his time working in the UK.

‘I’m a black man, I know what discrimination feels like,’ he said.

He said the second interview after his Court of Appeal win was discovered, was more like an ‘interrogation’ and that having his Christian beliefs questioned made him feel ‘uncomfortable’. He said he was ignored by the interviewers when he repeatedly said he was feeling ‘anxious.’

‘I felt my faith was under attack,’ he told the tribunal, and he said ‘he felt angry and offended.’

‘I would not discriminate against people. I would never and have never discriminated against anybody. My faith does not allow me to discriminate against people,’ he said.

He said many people in Britain, ‘professionals, judges, housewives, husbands’ hold the same Christian views as him.

He added: ‘I believe that The Bible is the word of God. The Bible is a sacred book and I believe in The Bible.’ The Bible defined what is a ‘sin’, not him’, he said.

‘Minority Stress Theory’

Commenting on the job in question: ‘I wanted to work with people from all backgrounds. I was thinking about how I could help people and support them – something I have been doing for 20 years.

‘As a Christian I do not see any conflict in working with and for people from the LGBT community.’

Mr Ngole said he felt ‘humiliated and betrayed’ by Touchstone’s decision to withdraw the job and that the ‘reasoning for withdrawing the job offer left me confused, exhausted and depressed.’

The trial will continue when the tribunal will analyse Minority Stress Theory in a UK court for the first time.

The theory suggests that minority groups experience stress stemming from experiences of stigma and discrimination.

In response to Mr Ngole’s legal claims, Touchstone lawyers tried to use the theory to justify discriminating against him. They suggested that if one of their service users discovered Mr Ngole’s Christian beliefs on human sexuality, it would cause them distress, and therefore he could not be employed.

If the courts accept this reasoning, it will send an alarming green light to other employers that they can discriminate against Bible-believing Christians in any situation where they might interact with people who identify as LGBTQ+.

In response, the tribunal will hear expert evidence in support of Mr Ngole that no evidence exists to support claims that a polite expression of a contrary opinion can cause psychological harm.

Please Join Me In Praying A Curse Onto Cancer.

The enemy has ended billions of lives in great pain by using his tool called cancer.

I am fed up. I have lost too many friends, relatives and colleagues to this dreadful condition.
I have recently been sickened when a number of children and young people have departed this earth in a most horrible way.
One major problem is that we have far too few Christians dedicating time to praying against this condition - whether in general terms or in specific cases.
Bring Jesus into the equation! He is stronger than the enemy. It is no coincidence that the incidence of cases has been increasing as Christian numbers in the West have been decreasing.
My horror is prompted when hearing of this morning's horrid death of a six year old little lad known to some good friends.
I am angry; filled to the brim with righteous anger!

Remaining Christian After Being In Further Education.

How to stay Christian in college.

If you aren’t careful, college just might shipwreck your faith.

A recent Lifeway Research poll found that “Two-thirds (66%) of American young adults who attended a Protestant church regularly for at least a year as a teenager say they also dropped out for at least a year between the ages of 18 and 22.”

A closer look at the data reveals a particularly troubling trend: The No. 1 reason that respondents gave for why they stopped going to church was that they moved for college (34%).

As the saying goes, forewarned is forearmed. If you’re a Christian who has just left your home behind and landed fresh on a college campus, it’s important to consider what it will take for you to stay a Christian in college.

I’ll happily admit that I stole (or rather, was inspired by) this title from a helpful book I was given when I went to seminary: How to Stay Christian in Seminary, by David Matthis and Jonathan Parnell, with a foreword by John Piper.

The authors warn that going to seminary is important, but that it can also be dangerous. The same goes for college. Going to college, especially if you go away to a secular college, can be a challenging time for young Christian students. The rigorous academic environment, peer pressure, and a plethora of temptations can make it difficult to stay grounded in your faith.

And while those who attend a strong Christian college, like Liberty University, will have faith-preserving and faith-building resources built into the environment and schedule, it’s still up to you, as a young person, to avail yourself of them so you are being both deliberate and self-aware in your faith walk. As I noted, even those who attend seminary and spend their entire college existence studying the Bible and biblical doctrine can still end up walking away from the faith if they’re not vigilant.

With intentionality and a few good choices, you can not only stay Christian but also grow in your faith during your college years. So, here are three strategies for staying Christian in college.

1. Join a healthy Gospel-preaching church

Attending a church that preaches the true Gospel message is crucial for maintaining your faith in college. When you arrive at college, you are going to have a major choice to make during your very first week. More specifically, on your very first Sunday: Will you get up and go to church?

Your parents won’t be there anymore to make you. The choice is yours now.

Let me encourage you to make this wise choice: Go. Once you force yourself out of bed, you’ll be glad you went.

But what kind of church should you go to? While there may be other factors to consider, here are three non-negotiable things that you should look for in your new church:

  • Expositional preaching: A healthy Gospel-preaching church will prioritize expositional preaching, which means teaching verse-by-verse through the Bible. This approach ensures that the preacher is expounding on the text’s intended meaning, rather than imposing his own interpretation (and yes, he should be a male preacher). This helps you to understand God’s Word more deeply and apply it to your life.
  • The true Gospel message: A healthy Gospel-preaching church will proclaim the true Gospel message, which emphasizes the problem of sin, the historicity of Christ’s life, death, and resurrection, and the offer of salvation for all who repent and believe. This message is central to the Christian faith and is essential for maintaining a strong relationship with God.
  • The authority of Scripture: A healthy Gospel-preaching church will uphold the authority, inerrancy, and sufficiency of Scripture. This means that they will teach the Bible as the infallible, inspired Word of God, which is relevant and applicable to our lives today.

College students should look for a church that emphasizes these characteristics. As theologian J.I. Packer said, “The Church is the conservatory of the Bible. It is the place where the Word of God is normally and naturally studied.”

2. Make time to study the Bible

College is a busy time, but making time to study the Bible is essential for staying Christian in college. A good church is important, but just as important is your personal study of the Bible. As the Apostle Paul wrote in 2 Timothy 3:16-17, ESV,

“All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness, that the man of God may be complete, equipped for every good work.”

College is a time when many students develop habits that will last a lifetime. By cultivating the habit of studying the Bible, you are laying a strong foundation for your spiritual growth. Regular Bible study also provides spiritual nourishment and helps you to grow in your relationship with God. In John 15:5, Jesus said,  “I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.”

Don’t let college become a black hole for your devotional life. If you look up one day and realize that there is dust on your Bible, it means that there is probably spiritual dust on your soul as well. Don’t ever become so busy studying your assigned textbooks that God’s book goes untouched.

To maintain your Christian faith in college, make it a priority to set aside time each day for Bible study and prayer.

3. Make good friends

Friendships play a significant role in shaping our moral character and spiritual growth. As simple as it sounds, it’s essential to make good friends who will encourage and support you in your faith. Remember that the friends you choose to have in your life will unavoidably have a profound impact on your moral formation, good or bad.  As Proverbs 13:20 says,  “Whoever walks with the wise becomes wise, but the companion of fools will suffer harm.”

Good Christian friends can also hold you accountable and encourage you in your faith. The world, the flesh, the devil, and secular influences, combined with newfound freedom and the loss of your traditional accountability structures, are going to tempt you in ways you’ve never encountered before.

Having close Christian friends to whom you can confess your sin, and who can support you in resisting temptation, is an often overlooked but crucial aspect of maintaining your Christian faith and practice during your years of college life. As Hebrews 10:24-25 reminds us:

“And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.”

Do your friends “stir you up to love and good works”? If not, it’s time to find new friends.

When choosing friends, seek out those who share your commitment to Christ, biblical truth, and your desire to grow in your faith.

Conclusion

Staying Christian in college is not merely about maintaining a set of doctrines that you agree to on paper; it’s about solidifying one’s identity in Christ and growing deeper in your walk with the Lord. The college years are formative, shaping not only academic and career paths but also personal values and character. Remaining steadfast in the Christian faith provides a moral compass, a foundation, that will also help you when you leave college and are forced to navigate the tumultuous waters of moral relativism and depravity out in the world.

Staying Christian in college can be challenging, but by joining a healthy Gospel-preaching church, making time to study the Bible, and making good, like-minded friends, you can maintain your Christian faith and grow in your relationship with God. And always remember the words of the Apostle Paul in 1 Timothy 4:16:

“Keep a close watch on yourself and on the teaching. Persist in this, for by so doing you will save both yourself and your hearers.”

ALLISTER'S NEWS | MARCH 2024

Dear All.

‘They were terrified and asked each other, "Who is this? Even the wind and the waves obey him!"' Mark 4:41

In January last year I made my first trip abroad with Release International to Nigeria. Knowing that I would be hearing heart-breaking stories of persecution, I thought it might be depressing. However, it turned out to be one of the most inspirational trips I have ever made. Why? Because time after time persecuted believers told me that even in the worst storms of life, they knew the peace of Christ in their hearts.

In Mark 4, when the disciples were in the boat and a storm arose, Jesus was asleep. It appeared that He wasn’t in control. The storm was raging, the disciples were scared, and Jesus didn’t seem to be doing anything about it. ‘Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?’ they said. But Jesus ‘rebuked the wind and said to the waves, “Silence! Be still!” Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm’ (Mark 4:39 NLT.)

There’s no doubt that God has the power to calm our storms too. He’s in control of everything and can bring calm just by speaking into a situation. Jesus asked the disciples, ‘Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?’ I never cease to be amazed by the faith of our persecuted brothers and sisters in Christ.

Previously:

Last year was a very busy and fruitful year for me. I had over 40 speaking engagements and events across the Midlands and north of England, I spent a week exhibiting at the Keswick convention, and I also travelled to Northern Ireland for some helpful training.

If I haven’t visited your church yet (or if you would like me to visit again) please do get in touch. I still have some availability in 2024 and it would be great to hear from you.

Equally, if you would like to show a short Release International video clip in your church, or if you want to hold a special service focusing on persecuted Christians, we have lots of helpful resources to support you. Just get in touch and let me know how I can assist.

Coming Up:

Artless Theatre Company’s fantastic If Prison Walls Could Speak production will be in our region again in September 2024. You can read an excellent review of a recent performance in Premier Christianity here. So far, we have the following dates confirmed:

Friday 6th September - Fernwood Community Church, Newark, Nottinghamshire.

Saturday 7th September - Jubilee Church, Hull.

We are looking for another five venues to host a performance in the north and Midlands area between Sunday 8th September and Thursday 12th September. If your church would like to host a performance, please do get in touch.

I wonder if you might consider organising a fundraising event or activity to support the work of Release International in 2024? We recently published an A-Z booklet of fundraising ideas to inspire you. This is available on our website or in hard copy – just let me know if you would like one posted. And do let me know if you decide to plan an event or activity so we can support you.

And finally, can I also draw your attention to our new appeal for Christians who are forced to flee? The appeal highlights the story of Pastor Luul, who was imprisoned in Eritrea for 14 years without charges. His wife and daughter had been forced to flee while he was in prison. When he was finally released in 2021, he escaped Eritrea, and was able to rejoin his family in the UK last year. Release International supports partners working with Christians across the world who have been forced to flee. I wonder if this is something you might consider promoting in your church or small group? You can read more about Luul’s story and find out how to give here.

My confirmed engagements for the next period are listed below:

Saturday 21st April – Ludlow Elim Pentecostal Church

Saturday 18th May – Volunteers and supporters' event at Ebenezer Gospel Hall, Killamarsh nr Sheffield. All are welcome, to attend please book here.

Sunday 19th May – Mount Zion Independent Methodist Church, Wigan

Sunday 9th June – Hope Community Church, Wigston

Sunday 23rd June – Millpool Church, Birmingham

Pray:
  • Give thanks for the ways in which God continues to sustain and bless the ministry of Release International.

  • Give thanks for all our international partners who work tirelessly to love and serve persecuted Christians, even in the most difficult of circumstances.

  • Please pray for my field trip to Nigeria in early summer.

  • Please pray for the extended Artless Theatre Company tour: that all who see this powerful play will be moved to stand with their persecuted Christian family.

As always, thank you so much for your ongoing prayers and support.
